Evelyn’s Birthday

Our little girl turned six years old yesterday! I am soaking up how precious this time of our life is with our children at the ages they are. Just Evelyn & I went to breakfast at the local Bagel Bakery for her birthday… as we’re sitting there, the song “Sixteen Candles” began to play. It starts, “Happy Birthday… Happy Birthday, Baby… Oh… I love you so! Sixteen Candles….” and a huge smile spread across Evelyn’s face. At first, I didn’t understand why she was smiling, then I realized the background music and made the connection. THEN I realized that 10 years from now she will be turning 16! And oh, the tears welled up and my little girl, beamed, oblivious to my emotion, as she chowed down on her chocolate muffin & chocolate milk. I asked her if she would want to go to breakfast with me when on her 16th birthday and she said, “yes!” My heart swelled with joy!

What a blessing children are! I have got to remind myself of this in the midst of frustration and difficulty with raising our kids. My prayer is to enjoy every moment that I have with them and to live and love as God calls me to so that they may be drawn to the love of God and His heart. May I know that my time on this earth is short, but my faith and actions reach far beyond my life through the generations that will follow me. And Hallelujah! God’s love is continual, through everlasting to everlasting… may I revere and fear Him who gives life!

As for mortals, their days are like grass; they flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.
But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
-Psalm 103:15-18
