Give Thanks

This past weekend, I was blessed to participate in a wonderful women’s event called, “Celebrating Our Seasons” here in Gainesville. The event was to help raise funds and support for the local IHN (Interfaith Hospitality Network), which is a wonderful organization that helps families in need of a place to live and get back on their feet. Christy Nockels led the worship (along with her husband playing guitar) and it was truly a beautiful expression of sincere worship from the two of them. Her honesty and sharing from the heart during her time of leading us women in worship was true and real… I was blessed greatly!

The keynote speaker for the event was Pam Tebow. She was very lively and full of scriptures and encouragement for moms especially! I took many notes and felt a great sense of hope after her times of sharing. One of the scriptures she shared that has spoken to me and God is continually reminding me of is 1 Thessalonians 5:18: …give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. What?! In all circumstances? Yes… What a reminder for ourselves, and also a scripture to teach our children, too! How many times to I hear whining about something a brother or sister did… again? That is a chance to give thanks. And how about for me? Wow… I have plenty of circumstances to give thanks… some wonderful, and others… well, not so wonderful. I am also soaking up the verses surrounding this treasure of thankfulness:

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.
-1 Thessalonians 5:16-22

What specific instructions Paul gives us: Rejoice always, pray without stopping, give thanks in ALL circumstances… and this is God’s will in Christ Jesus for me! Whew… what a challenge to live this out continually… day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute! My soul yearns to be in God’s will and obedient to His Word… these life giving instructions are just that, to give us life… a life of joy and of hope in Him! May we all be challenged to give thanks in all circumstances, even when our feelings don’t want to… it is a choice to be thankful. God will equip us!
